The Journey to Our Portrait: A Process of Community Collaboration

The Rolla Public Schools Portrait of a Bulldog is the result of a year-long, community-driven initiative to define the specific skills and competencies our learners need to thrive in life beyond graduation. We believe that academic knowledge is the foundation, but these competencies are the tools learners use to build their future.

A Collaborative Foundation

The process was guided by a diverse committee of stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, parents, students, business leaders, and community members. This group met regularly throughout the school year to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the demands of the modern world.

Key Milestones in Our Journey

  • Defining the "Why": The committee began by identifying the hopes and aspirations we have for all Rolla learners. We asked ourselves: What skills are necessary for learners to successfully transition into local industry and post-secondary education?
  • Identifying the Gaps: We analyzed current educational landscapes and compared them against the evolving needs of the workforce and society.
  • Drafting & Refinement: Through breakout groups and collaborative feedback sessions, the committee narrowed down dozens of essential traits into seven core competencies.
  • Consensus & Finalization: Every competency and skill definition was carefully vetted by the committee to ensure it reflected the values of the larger community.

Looking Forward

This portrait was officially adopted by the Board of Education in June of 2026. The Portrait of a Bulldog serves as our North Star for our continuous school improvement planning, guiding everything from curriculum development to professional learning. It is our promise to ensure that educating and empowering all learners for their future is a tangible reality for every Rolla Bulldog.

Bulldog Competencies

  • Within the RPS Portrait of a Bulldog framework, Critical Thinking moves beyond simple memorization, where learners become active, strategic navigators of challenges. This competency is built on a foundation of four core actions:

    • Analytical Approach: Learners start by breaking down complex situations to clearly identify, define, and analyze problems.
    • Problem Solving: Learners don’t just find an answer; they develop and implement strategies, staying persistent until an effective solution is reached.
    • Resourceful: Learners are adept at identifying and leveraging the tools, information, and support systems available to them to overcome hurdles.
    • Reflective: Learners most importantly, they look back on their decisions with a sense of accountability, taking ownership of the outcomes and applying those lessons to future situations.
  • RPS Bulldogs demonstrate Emotional Intelligence with a balance of internal awareness and external empathy to navigate social and personal challenges effectively. This competency is defined by five pillars of personal and interpersonal growth:

    • Self-Awareness: Learners possess the clarity to recognize their own emotions, thoughts, and values, while understanding the ripple effect these have on those around them.
    • Self-Management: Learners are able to regulate their emotions and behaviors across various situations.
    • Empathy: Learners move beyond their own experience to understand and share the feelings of others.
    • Confidence & Self-Efficacy: Learners maintain a grounded belief in their own ability to tackle tasks and succeed in their endeavors.
    • Self-Advocacy: Learners have a deep understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, giving them the courage to speak up for their needs and make choices that align with their best interests.
  • Collaboration represents the transition from individual achievement to collective success. This competency emphasizes the interpersonal dynamics required to reach a common objective through three key areas:

    • Accountability: Learners take full ownership of their assigned roles or tasks while working actively with their team to hold one another to a high standard of excellence.
    • Conflict Resolution: Learners develop the essential skills to navigate disagreements, seeking out mutually agreeable solutions and demonstrating the ability to compromise when necessary.
    • Team Orientation: Learners maintain a productive and respectful presence within a group, prioritizing the shared goal over individual interests to ensure the team succeeds together.
  • Communication defines a set of skills that ensure Rolla learners can effectively exchange information and connect with others in diverse settings. This competency focuses on the bridge between internal thoughts and external expression through four key pillars:

    • Active Listening: Learners move beyond simply hearing words to truly concentrating on, understanding, and responding thoughtfully to what is being said.
    • Articulate Expression: Learners develop the ability to convey their ideas and thoughts clearly and effectively, mastering both oral and written forms of communication.
    • Pragmatic Skills: Learners learn to navigate the social "rules" of interaction, understanding how to use eye contact, tone of voice, and body language to communicate appropriately in different social contexts.
    • Synthesizing Information: Learners gain the ability to combine various pieces of information into a cohesive whole, helping others understand complex messages more easily.
  • RPS Bulldogs demonstrate Responsible Citizenship by recognizing their role within a larger community and acting with character and purpose. This competency focuses on the intersection of personal ethics and community contribution through four key areas:

    • Accountability: Learners take full ownership of their actions and the resulting consequences, whether working independently or with others.
    • Professionalism: Learners consistently demonstrate reliability and respect, maintaining a positive attitude and a high standard of conduct in all their endeavors.
    • Proactive: Learners don’t wait to be told what to do; instead, they take the initiative to identify needs within their community and apply creative thinking to develop solutions.
    • Integrity: Learners are guided by a strong internal moral compass, choosing to be honest and do the right thing simply because it is right, even when no one is watching.
  • RPS Bulldogs embrace a Learner Mindset, viewing education as a lifelong journey rather than a destination. This competency emphasizes the internal drive and resilience necessary to embrace challenges through four specific traits:

    • Effort: Learners operate with the belief that intelligence and abilities are not fixed but grow through dedication, hard work, and tackling difficult tasks.
    • Adaptability: Learners remain flexible and open-minded, showing a willingness to accept feedback, embrace change, and explore new ways of doing things.
    • Grit: Learners demonstrate true perseverance and a sustained passion for their goals, maintaining focus even when faced with significant obstacles, difficulties, or failures.
    • Curiosity: Learners possess an innate desire to understand the world more deeply, frequently asking "why" and seeking out new information and experiences.
  • Future Readiness identifies the practical skills necessary for learners to transition successfully from the classroom to independent adulthood. This competency focuses on navigating the complexities of modern life through four critical domains:

    • Financial Competency: Learners understand and effectively apply financial management skills, including budgeting and investing.
    • Career Readiness: This involves connecting academic knowledge to professional pathways, helping learners understand their personal strengths and goals while applying classroom skills to real-world contexts.
    • Digital Competency: Learners are equipped to effectively and ethically navigate the digital landscape, utilizing various tools, media, and technologies responsibly.
    • Media Literacy: This skill emphasizes the ability to identify reliable sources, recognize purpose and bias in media.
