Follow-up Letter Regarding Social Media Threats

Posted Date: 9/19/24 (12:55 PM)

Dear Rolla 31 Families,

This letter is a follow-up to our recent threat situation.

Allow me to begin this message by clearly stating there is no current cause for alarm.

I am reaching out to ask for your help and support. Like our fellow school districts across the state and nation, we have received reports of social media threats toward schools in our district in the past week. While there was no credibility to the threats and they did not originate locally, these incidents caused stress on our students and families and disrupted the learning environment. These incidents also draw time and resources from our law enforcement agencies.

We ask again that you talk to your child about the seriousness of making or sharing posts that contain threats or language that can be perceived as threatening. Please help us emphasize to all students that making a threat against a public school, whether it occurs on social media, in conversation, or in any other form has serious legal and disciplinary consequences. As a district, we process all incidents in accordance with our district’s policies with support from local law enforcement.

Please also talk to your child about reporting any threatening posts or communication to our school staff and police. We continue to encourage an environment where students, staff, and families feel empowered to report anything that might be suspicious or out of the ordinary; prompt reporting is important in helping us be proactive in maintaining a safe school environment.

If you see a social media threat, do not forward or repost it. Instead, take a screenshot and provide the image to school administrators and police. Sharing the post makes it harder to determine who created it and hampers the investigation.

We appreciate our administrators and local law enforcement partners who work quickly and thoroughly to investigate threats, and we are thankful these recent threats were deemed not to be credible. We also applaud the students who have come forward with information that led to the quick resolution of these situations. We will continue to treat all incidents and reported threats in a serious manner. Our number one priority is the safety and security of all of our students, staff, and faculty. We appreciate your continued support and understanding while we work through these challenges.

Thank you,

Dr. Kyle W. Dare
